Preventing All Kinds of Water Damage | SERVPRO of Rock County

Restoration of a water damage in a house Call SERVPRO of Rock County when you find water damage on your property for a faster response!

There are few things worse than having to deal with water damage in your home. Water moves quickly, and even a small leak can lead to huge issues as water trickles into every nook and cranny.

With water playing such a crucial role in our daily lives, it’s important to be able to safely use water on demand. We never really know what Mother Nature is going to do, either—which makes being prepared for potential water issues crucial.

While natural disasters may still leave our homes wet, there are plenty of ways we can prepare and prevent water from causing total chaos in our homes.

Manmade Disasters

Think about how many appliances in your home use water. How many of them run multiple times a day? Washing machines, dishwashers, water heaters and refrigerators certainly make handling day-to-day life convenient, but they are also highly susceptible to leaks and other failures. Sinks, toilets and showers are other areas of our home where water damage often starts.

Pull your large appliances out every few months to clean under and behind them. Check for mold growth, musty odors or soft spots in the floor.

Make sure water lines look like they are in good shape, and replace anything that has worn out. The faster you can find and correct leaks, the less damage you will incur.

Check under all of your sinks once a week. With numerous water lines (and what is likely entirely too many cleaning products stored under most of your sinks), leaks can be hard to catch until it is too late.

Run your hands along the water lines to feel for excess moisture and make sure connection points are all tight. Check your bathrooms weekly, too, to make sure everything is running as it should be.

Natural Disasters

Regular home maintenance doesn’t just go a long way in preventing water damage from internal leaks, but it can also help keep your home prepared for potential natural disasters. Add a few things to your to-do list in order to mitigate as much loss as possible when a strong storm system is predicted to move through.

Clean your gutters regularly, especially ahead of winter weather. Clean, well-attached gutters and downspouts can ensure water stays off your roof and out of your home. It can also help prevent ice dams from forming during the winter.

Make sure your yard has plenty of sloping and drainage so that water flows quickly away from your home. Adding organic materials or a rain garden can help increase the rate of absorption in your yard during even the heaviest rain or a fast snowmelt. Keep debris picked up too in order to avoid any kind of blockage.

Stay ahead of water damage to keep your home protected. With some simple home maintenance, you can rest assured that you are as safe as possible no matter what happens.

4 Classes of Water Damage

Classes of Water Damage losses are determined by the rate of evaporation based on the type of materials affected by water damage to your property. Determining the Class of Water is an important first step, and will determine the amount and type of equipment utilized to restore your business. There are four IICRC water damage classifications, they are as follows:

Class 1 - Slow Evaporation Rate
Water losses that affect only part of a room or area, or losses with lower permeance/porosity materials (e.g., plywood, particle board, structural wood, vinyl composition tile or VCT, concrete). Little or no wet carpet or cushion is present. Minimum moisture is absorbed by materials, releasing moisture slowly.

Class 2 - Fast Evaporation Rate
Water losses that affect an entire room or carpet and cushion. Water has wicked up walls 12" - 24". There is moisture remaining in structural materials (e.g., plywood, particle board, structural wood, concrete).

Class 3 - Fastest Evaporation Rate
Water may have come from overhead. Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion and sub-floor in the entire area are saturated.

Class 4 - Specialty Drying Situations
These consist of wet materials with very low permeance/porosity (hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, stone, and crawlspace). Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which requires very low specific humidity.

Have you had water damage in your home?

10/21/2022 (Permalink)

If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you have experienced water damage at your residence. If so, then you are not alone! In fact, as many as 50% of homeowners in the US suffer some type of property damage caused by water each and every year. At SERVPRO® of Rock County, we understand the importance of this problem and are here to help.

The following will provide an overview of what causes water damage and how our team can help with cleanup after water damage inhabits their property from a flooded basement.

Water damage can be caused by a variety of things, including leaks, burst pipes, floods, and storms.

Water can cause a lot of damage to your home, mainly because of the water’s ability to absorb into walls and insulation. When water stays in contact with wallboard or insulation for several hours, it can destroy the materials used to construct build-outs and interior walls as well as damage electrical systems. Our technicians have the equipment and training to keep moisture away from your belongings as they work quickly to remove all traces of water and dry out your home with high-efficiency dehumidifiers.

The 3 Basic Categories of Water

7/22/2022 (Permalink)

The 3 Basic Categories of Water

Category 1: White/Clean Water
The water stems from a clean source and poses no substantial risk from contact, ingestion, or inhalation. However, it can develop in another category if it comes into contact with other surfaces or materials. Typically, Category 1 water will evolve into Category 2 after 24 hours if left untreated.

Category 2: Grey Water
Grey water is contaminated water that doesn’t contain sewage. It may still contain some contaminates and has the potential to cause illness if contacted or ingested. It may contain potentially dangerous levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter (chemical or biological). Grey water can arise from sources such as a sink, washing machine, or the shower. Grey water can be used on your lawn or garden but if left unattended for 48 hours it can become Category 3.

Category 3: Black Water
Black water contains sewage or has encountered fecal matter. It is grossly contaminated and may contain pathogenic bacteria or other harmful agents. Such water sources may carry silt, organic matter, pesticides, metals, or toxic organic substances.

Time and temperature can also affect the quality of water and change its category.

Water Damage from Washing Machine

4/16/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage from washing machines is one of the leading sources of residential water losses. The good news is that preventing water damage from washing machines is not as hard as you may think. Follow these tips to avoid water damage issues caused by a washing machine malfunction in your home.

-Regularly check water supply hoses (both hot and cold) for blisters, worn tubing, stress cracks or loose connections. Replace damaged hoses with newer types that are made of flexible plastic tubing encased in a stainless-steel braided exterior.

-Replace hoses every five years even if they don’t seem damaged to prevent water damage from washing machines. Deterioration may occur on the inside of the hose and may not be visible until it’s too late.

-Check the drain hose for wear and tear and to make sure it’s tightly inserted into the main drain line. Ensure it doesn’t dislodge when the washer agitates or drains.

-Leave at least four inches of space between the wall and your washer to prevent the supply and drain hoses from becoming kinked.

-Don’t overload the washing machine with laundry. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how full your washer should be. Distribute clothes evenly and loosely inside the machine.

-Use the right detergent for your washing machine in the correct amount to avoid suds and bubbles that can cause the washer to overflow. Read the instructions manual to learn which type of detergent is best for your machine and how much to use each wash.

Believe it or not, Spring is Coming!

Evaluate your home’s exterior

Your home is designed to shelter you from the weather. To keep it in tip-top condition, do regular walk-arounds and inspect for issues. Keep an eye out for the following things:

  • Loose shingles
  • Loose siding
  • Tree branches extending over your house or driveway
  • All unattached structures like sheds or gazebos should be bolted securely to their foundation
  • Loose patio furniture that should be secured
  • Loose gutters and missing/detached downspouts
  • If you have shutters, make sure they’re secure and clear of debris
  • Check to see if your fence needs repair

Check your sump pump

As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” And with all that rain, your risk of flooding increases. If you have a sump pump, it’s a great idea to run through an annual sump pump maintenance list.

You’ll want to clear all debris so it doesn’t impede function and ensure your back-up is in working order. With added sump pump failure and water backup coverage on your homeowner’s insurance policy, you’ll have better protection that can bring real peace of mind when the rain starts to fall.

Weather can be unpredictable, but you can still prepare for the unexpected.  Talk with your local insurance agent to review your homeowner’s coverage, and call SERVPRO of Rock County in the event your home sustains damage.  We are available to take your call 24/7/365 at 608-754-7202

Mold Damage in your Home or Business

9/24/2021 (Permalink)

The buildup of indoor moisture from high relative humidity, plumbing, and roof leaks may lead to mold damage. When the relative humidity is kept low, chances for condensation to take place reduce, and that means there are no appropriate conditions for fungi to grow. Mold spores cannot thrive without the presence of water in your home or business.

It is necessary to take precautionary measure when dealing with mold damage because it can cause health effects. Our SERVPRO technician assess the level of contamination and choose the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the job. When the area is extensively contaminated, we prefer a half-mask respirator, full body suits, and chemical resistant gloves. For light levels of contamination, an N95 respirator can be good enough.

We are careful not to spread the contamination to clean areas, and if we have to disturb the mold when cleaning the site, we make sure containment procedures are already in place. Containment also helps limit mold exposure to the occupants and our SERVPRO team.

After disturbing the mold, spores dust might settle on the porous and non-porous surfaces. When that happens, we do damp wiping and HEPA vacuuming to do the removal. We first determine the airflow direction and clean areas towards that path, and the cleaning process starts from the structure's top towards its bottom.

When drying the items and rooms, our SERVPRO technicians first remove any wet objects from the area to speed up the rate of evaporation and then we will setup dehumidifiers to lower the humidity. Moisture meters provide initial readings of overall humidity at the start of the job and will be monitored to ensure the project is complete.

Bring on the Rain

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

An unpleasant and unexpected surprise to some homeowners facing water damages is that their insurance won’t cover the costs. This is, of course, dependent on the situation at hand and what events lead up to the damaged property. Homeowners insurance does not cover water damages resulting from floods. Nor do they cover water related losses occurring from lack of maintenance or neglect. There are a few grey areas when these situations arise. For example, if the roof of your home springs a leak, your insurance should cover it, unless it was caused by gross neglect. In the unfortunate scenario that wind damage destroys shingles, or if a tree crashes into your roof, the water damage resulting will be covered by your insurance. Our team at SERVPRO possesses the equipment and expertise to help in any situation life hands to you and will make it "Like it never even happened."

What Water Can Ruin: Effects of Water Damages

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

Water is an unpredictable element which can bring devastating damages along with it. From heavy rainfalls which result in flooding, to broken pipes in your home that damages your property, water can bring and structure to its knees. When moisture comes into contact with the surfaces in your home or business it poses an endless amount of issues you will need to address immediately. Secondary issues such as warped flooring, damaged drywall and mold can all happen within a short amount of time. When mold forms after water loss, you may be faced with an uphill battle to restore the safety of your home. When faced with disastrous water loss and the damages they leave behind, call SERVPRO. We arrive quickly to get the work done well and right the first time.

Dirty or Clean?: Water Contamination

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

When water finds its way into your home or business, it is important to locate the exact port of entry and where the water originated from. Rainwater as opposed to a sewage back up, for example, change the dynamics of how a water loss situation is addressed and how the clean up will be handled. Bio hazardous materials need specially handling and personal protective gear, as opposed to lesser types of restoration water losses such as rain water leaking through the roof. It is vital to get dirty and non contaminated water from your structure as quickly as possible to avoid further damages from forming. SERVPRO has the tools needed and the expertise required to get your home and business cleaned and back in running order.

In a Matter of Minutes: Water Damage on Hardwood Surfaces

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

Water presents itself in many ways. From the rain that falls from the sky to the faucets in our homes and businesses. An essential ingredient to life can also be a detriment to the hardwood in your living or working space. When water comes into contact with natural materials such a wood, it is easily absorbed and within a matter of minutes can leave lasting and irreparable damage. Wood expands and swells when introduced to water in a very short amount of time causing bowing and dis-figuration. It is essential to removed the water as quickly as possible to stop the process of warping. SERVPRO has the tools needed to dry wooden surfaces and flooring from the inside out, saving you time, money and the historical value of your home.

Is Rainwater Dirty?

10/26/2020 (Permalink)

Contrary to popular belief, rainwater is relatively clean when it falls from the sky. Unfortunately, heavily polluted areas may cause the water droplets to become contaminated, resulting in water that may need to be purified if using for consumption. The same cannot be said about rainwater that enters your home or business. Once water comes into contact with any type of building materials (such as rain that has leaked through your roof or has flooded through your foundation) it becomes contaminated. When contaminated water enters your home, little time is available to move important items to higher ground. Once contaminated water comes into contact with your personal items, a deep sanitation must be conducted. Without thoroughly cleaning your belongings, you risk your health and the safety of your environment. If you are affected by flood water, give SERVPRO a call. We can help mitigate the problem and get you back on your feet faster.

When Water Rises.

9/23/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage in your home or business can be detrimental if not pricey. Water has the potential to damage almost any material in your home and can lead to even bigger issues if not addressed immediately. Hardwood flooring will begin to expand and warp within a matter of hours, causing irreversible destruction. With water that has been left to sit for long periods of time, mold is almost a certainty. Mold poses a multitude of issues which can ultimately affect your health if not properly removed. Preventative measures can be taken to help avoid water disasters in the future. Be sure to regularly monitor your sump pump to sure it will not malfunction during heavy rains. Inspecting windows or point of entry and adding caulking to prevent leaks is of good practice. Whenever you are facing a water damage disaster, give SERVPRO a call.

When the Rain Pours

9/23/2020 (Permalink)

Heavy rainfall can cause a multitude of problems. Rising waters can lead to flooding and property damage, as well as putting your business on hold. Loose shingles or improperly sealed windows and doors and cause leaks to form and unwanted water to enter your space. Sump pump failure can also be a side effect of excess storm waters, allowing dirty and sometimes sewage water to intrude. Simple maintenance such as checking and repairing the condition of your roof and inspecting the seal around doors and windows can save you time and money. Often times these issues are not recognized before disaster strikes leaving you with little time to make repairs. SERVPRO handles large and small scale water restoration for both residential and commercial locations. Give us a call for an estimate and let us do the dirty work.

Water can enter your home in a variety of ways, and if you do not frequent the property often, they can pack a bunch in your wallet. Taking On Water: What To Do When Your Basement Floods

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

A flooded basement is one of the most common issues a homeowner can face. Whether the sub pump failed or couldn't keep up with the amount of water that was coming through, the results can be lasting and the repairs can be costly. The most important step to take is to remove as much of the standing water as possible. SERVPRO has multiple pieces of state of the art equipment to help the process move quickly, which brings down the cost of repairs. The faster the water can be eliminated, the fewer issues you will have to deal with in the restoration. Hardwood floors pose a higher demand for quicker action. If left submerged for too long, the probability of saving them is lost. The sooner you call SERVPRO, the faster repairs can begin. We are available day and night to answer your call.

To Refinish or Replace: Water Damage to Hardwood Floors

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

When facing water damages to hardwood flooring there are many things to consider. The first and most logical decision to establish is figuring out what would be the most cost efficient method to take. More times than not, refinishing your floors is the least expensive route action. It all comes down to the damage that the flooring had sustained and if restoration is even a possibility. If water has been sitting stagnant on wood flooring for an extended period of time, repair may not be in the cards. Wood absorbs liquids and expands because of it. When this happens vital and irreparable damage occurs and the floors will need to be replaced. There are a wide variety of synthetic wood replacements that have their own advantages and do not suffer water damage as severely, but they can never replace the history and character of an original hardwood floor. Repair them if you can. Replace them if you must.

But is it covered? : Will your insurance come through?

10/21/2019 (Permalink)

Heavy rainfall batter a home's roof with water over spilling from the rain gutters Heavy rains batter a home. Steam rises from the shingles

Often times when an unexpected storm causes extensive damages to your home or business, there is an uncertainty as to what will be covered by your insurance policy. There is no worse scenario when dealing with a clean up after a natural occurrence to discover the cost may be up to you to pay. It is important that preventative measures are taken in order to save you from having to pay a costly repair bill. Most of the time, if a storm has opened up a hole in your home allowing water to enter, it will be covered, but there are stipulations. If rotted or warped shingles were present before the storm, chances are you will be held responsible for the cost of repairs. It is important to have your home inspected to know where any problem areas are located and dealt with. It can save you time and money in the future.

Sparks Will Fly

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

In this day and age, it is safe to say that our most important information is harbored within our handheld devices. From iPads to Galaxy's, electronics are an ever present force in our daily lives. These items are relatively small and travel with us most everywhere we go. So what happens if your devices come into contact with unwanted liquids? The first action you should take is to ensure the device is powered off, then try to remove as much water as possible immediately. Shake as much of the liquid out as possible. Do not attempt to use any source of heat, such as baking your device or using a hairdryer. It will severely damage the circuits. Unfortunately, rice isn't a viable option. Studies show that rice is ineffective at absorbing water from your electronics. Our professionals at SERVPRO have the capabilities to help save your electronics and personal documents as well, give us a call today with any questions you may have.

When the water rises

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

With summer ending and fall weather approaching, it may not occur to us that flooding is possible at any time of year for multiple reasons. It is important to know what to do when you find yourself in high water with little time to spare. Move to higher ground immediately. Remaining at ground level or below heightens the possibility of injury. Be sure to keep children away from dirty water. Teens and children should be kept well away from contaminated items and unsanitary water. Be sure to follow the guide lines given by authorities and be aware of the dangers that are posed inside and outside of your location. Keep fresh water on hand, filling a bathtub with water is a good way of having water easily accessible. Be sure to become familiarized with your insurance and what it covers in advance. You never want to be caught in a situation that leaves you in over your head in costs for repairs. And as always, give us a call at SERVPRO to begin the restoration process. Flooding can be life changing. Always be prepared for what may came next.

I Saw the Signs: 4 Signs of Water Damage

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

When unwanted water seeps into places it doesn’t belong, it brings numerous issues along that can make matters worse. Water damage can become more serious as the problem goes undetected or unaddressed. Not only does water damage spread, it also becomes significantly at risk of mold formation in a short amount of time. Unfortunately, water damage isn’t always apparent. Our skilled technicians at SERVPRO of Rock County are equipped with infrared sensors which can detect temperature changes within the walls. But what are the signs to notice before you give us a ring? Here are 4 signs of impending water damage.

Do you hear what I hear? : Most of us are familiar with the sounds our homes make. From the rushing water of the plumbing systems, to creaking floorboards in the hallways, they become less alarming as time goes by. What you need to pay attention to are the different or unfamiliar sounds your home may be making. From a slow drip to flowing water, be aware of the sounds around you, they may indicate a larger problem.

What stinks? : When moisture comes in contact in dark places, a distinct scent of mildew is sure to follow. Trust your nose and follow it to the source. Early detection may help you prevent a huge mold infestation on top of the water damages.

From a puddle to a pool: Have you noticed unexplainable pools of water? Any puddles that keep reappearing after you’ve cleaned them? Chances are you are facing a leak somewhere in the area.

Cold Abode: Moisture and water tend to zap a home of heat, as it draws it in to evaporate. If your home is difficult to heat or your walls are cold to the touch, it may be an indication of moisture within.

When water damage presents itself unexpectedly, give us a call day or night and we will be there to make things right!

History Beneath Our Feet: Saving Hardwood

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

9/11/2018

Hardwood floors are a classic signature to any home, bringing a warmth and delicate age to any environment they bestow. From old country farm homes, to sprawling warehouses hardwood flooring adds finesse. But with the sweets comes the sours. When water damage occurs, time is of the absolute essence. Warping and disfigurement from water can leave lasting and detrimental effects within an incredibly short amount of time. Some of which cannot be repaired to its original glory. That’s why one of the most useful methods of recovery from damaging water to natural hardwood floors is our highly effective Drying Mat System. Our mats have mastered the art of removing water vapor that has been deeply absorbed by wooden planks. Our system has saved countless dollars and spared even more headaches for our customer base. Our drying mats are surprisingly simple in design visually (a basic floor mat with a hose attached) but incredibly powerful. When a hometown customer of ours had a pinched line in their ice maker, it caused an incredible amount of access water which flooded her kitchen. Our team of meticulously trained experts at SERVPRO of Rock County was able to immediately address the situation and have the damage under control with the use of our Drying Mat System. Hardwood floors retain a time in history, some being centuries old. Being able to preserve what we can and restoring what we must is what makes what we do so worth it.
