To Refinish or Replace: Water Damage to Hardwood Floors

When facing water damages to hardwood flooring there are many things to consider. The first and most logical decision to establish is figuring out what would be the most cost efficient method to take. More times than not, refinishing your floors is the least expensive route action. It all comes down to the damage that the flooring had sustained and if restoration is even a possibility. If water has been sitting stagnant on wood flooring for an extended period of time, repair may not be in the cards. Wood absorbs liquids and expands because of it. When this happens vital and irreparable damage occurs and the floors will need to be replaced. There are a wide variety of synthetic wood replacements that have their own advantages and do not suffer water damage as severely, but they can never replace the history and character of an original hardwood floor. Repair them if you can. Replace them if you must.
